I am trying to get most of the plot twists done early in the story so I can spend time answering them rather than time wasted establishing characters.
I think that sort of thing is better done during the story.

See my philosophy on story telling and what is wrong with it these days is that we spend to much time on the characters and not enough of the story its self.
A good story can define characters through their actions and way of speaking rather than taking a moment each time to slow down everything.
Sure it might take longer to get a clearly defined character but its better than breaking the flow like throwing a lady on her period off of a roof or like a poorly told story.
